Shivamogga city, which is district headquarters, lies in the central part of Karnataka. It is staged on the banks of the Tunga river. Shivamogga city, which is surrounded by Western Ghats, is also called “Cradle of Malenadu”. It is 569 metres above the sea level and comprises of abundant of green nature, paddy agricultural lands and farm lands of arecanut and coconut. World famous Jog Falls is also present in the same district. Temples and palaces having rich architecture and history of about 100-1000 years like Kavaledurga Fort, Shivappanayaka’s Bidanur Fort, Chennamma’s Fort in Keladi, Ikkeri’s Aghoreshwara Temple, Western Ghats, variety of birds, animals, species, ample of forests containing medicinal plants, rivers, electricity generating stations are the main attractions in the district. It is land of famous scientist and poets. Poets like Paramadeva, Linganna, Sanchi’s Honnamma have increased reputation of Shivamogga. Institutes like Sahyadri College, Kuvempu University has taken district to a different level in educational field. Bhadravathi is the industrial town of Shivamogga district. It lies at the distance of about 255 kms (158 miles) from state capital Bengaluru and 20 kms (12 miles) from district headquarters Shivamogga. The name Bhadravathi hails from river Bhadra which flows into the town. It was earlier called as Benkipura or Venkipura. Using the iron ore from Kemmannugundi hills and water from Bhadra river, iron industry and paper industry was established in 1918 and 1936 respectively. Bhadravathi was ruled by Hoysalas, Gangas, Kadambas. Lakshmi Narayana temple of 12th Century is one of the prime attractions of Bhadravathi.
